A ground-breaking recycling company in Rotherham recently revealed a plan to build five new recycling facilities around the UK, investing £200 million and creating 300 jobs.
Sterecycle has developed new technology for recycling waste in which household waste is sterilised before recycling, reducing the amount sent to landfill by as much as 70 per cent.
Earlier in the year, the recycling company announced that it would double the size of its operations on the former British Steel site in Rotherham, investing £10 million and creating 20 jobs. The expansion will enable Sterecycle to process 200,000 tonnes of waste annually, which is equivalent to the amount produced by a community of 400,000.
The firm has reportedly appointed UBS as its financial advisor, as it attempts to raise £50 million in new capital for its £200 million expansion programme.
The five new plants, to be located in sites around Britain, will increase Sterecycle’s capacity to process unsorted waste to around 1.5 million tonnes a year, which is equivalent to the waste produced each year by a city of three million.
At this time, the company has a seven-year waste processing contract with Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley councils.
