Marks & Spencer has said that it will sell foods that are packaged in UK-recycled plastic for the first time, as it moves to increase its use of recycled content.
New salad boxes that the retailer are introducing constitute the final stage in a project that was designed to created a “closed loop” in plastic food packaging used in the UK. What this means is that used plastic bottles are recycled to make new containers for food products.
Each year Britain uses approximately 2.5 million tonnes of plastic packaging, and the European Union requires that at least 22.5 per cent of the plastic be recycled. A key factor in achieving this target is finding local uses for the tonnes of recycled plastic waste generated in the country, and thereby cutting down on the amount of plastic that ends up in landfill.
To achieve its objective, M&S is working with Dagenham-based Closed Loop Recycling, which claims that its recycling facility is the world’s first to turn clear drinks bottles and milk bottles back into plastic that both safe and clean enough for food packaging.
The plant in Essex will also supply food-grade recycled plastic to other companies, including Coca-Cola and Solo Cup Europe. Solo makes cups for Pre A Manger and Starbucks.
