The UK government has been trying to encourage the public to reduce waste that is being sent to landfill by recycle and reuse initiatives, but in many parts of the country there has been limited success.
Households are feeling significant pressure from the recession, however, and many residents are now seeing the recycling and reuse of materials as a way to save money – as well as reduce waste. Increasing opportunities for householders to save in this area are becoming available on an ongoing basis.
Many UK residents already recycle much of their waste, by using recycling bins and participating in council refuse collections, and they are finding that items such as energy-saving bulbs can save them as much as 80 per cent of the energy cost of traditional bulbs and that discarded mobile phones can be recycled for cash.
Across the UK, low-income families are benefitting from clothing and toy donations received by numerous charities – that are then passed on to the increasing number of financially-distressed families.
Britons are finding that most items can be recycled or reused, even though it takes some creative thinking at times to find a way with some items.
