Calderdale Council’s Tory leader has been defending its new waste collection efforts, but a Liberal Democrat group has attacked the Council leader saying that the service is plagued by problems.
The Council and SITA UK, its recycling and waste management partner, have stressed that they are working together to get problems with the month-old service solved.
According to the council and the waste management group, they are engaged in daily meetings to trouble-shoot problems and are treating the concerns as an urgent matter. The joint team is focussed on missed collections and other complaints that have been received, and setting stringent standards.
In one case, a six feet high pile of uncollected bin bags formed outside the home of an infuriated couple, Martin and Karen Heathcote of Cross Platts, near Halifax.
Mrs Heathcote said that she was told she wasn’t on the wheelie bin list.
Council leader Stephen Baines thanked local residents for their patience, saying: “As a Calderdale resident myself, I recognise that this has been difficult and, at times, frustrating for some residents.”
He added: “However I also know that we can overcome these hurdles and have a waste collection service which is second to none.”
