By the year 2025, at least 70 per cent of all waste generated by households and the commercial and construction sectors in Wales will have to be recycled, as the government reveals its new and ambitious targets.
The recycling target is part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s new strategy for tackling the waste issue over the coming four decades.
In addition to the household and municipal waste target, key points included in the strategy include a target of 90 per cent in the recycling, recovery and reuse of all non-hazardous waste generated by the construction industry.
The strategy also calls for Wales to become a ‘Zero Waste’ nation by the year 2050, meaning that products and services reduce or reuse waste to the extent possible.
Bringing down the ecological footprint of Wales to a point that is closer to the average resource availability is also a target, as is the encouragement of a more joined-up recycling infrastructure.
New green jobs will be a focus, as Wales sees recycling services expand, as will the creation of new business opportunities. Businesses will be offered advice on how to go green as well as how to reduce operating costs.
The Environment, Sustainability & Housing Minister, Jane Davidson said at the launch of the proposed strategy: “What we do with our waste reflects how we treat our country and planet.”
She added: “Today we have proposed a new 70 per cent target for recycling and composting all waste by 2025. I believe this is the most ambitious recycling plan among all the administrations of the UK.”
