The timing of the rise in first- and second-class stamp prices on 6 April was not only bad news for UK businesses it also demonstrates how the Royal Mail is out of touch with its major customer base. New stamp prices are anticipated to cost UK businesses around £50 more for each 1,000 letters sent.
In 2008, 87 per cent of the 20 billion letters handled by the Royal Mail in the UK were business-related. Although many businesses use a franking machine to reduce their postage costs, the increase will also have an impact of them – of approximately two pence for each letter.
When the increase in the price of stamps is added to the cost of printing letters, folding them and franking or stamping them, the average cost to a business for sending out a single letter has risen to nearly 60p.
ViaPost, the computer-based postal system provider, allows its customers to send actual letters from their desktop at only 27p per item. The company provides a business solution that is fully-scalable, saving businesses as much as 40 per cent on postal costs. All printing and folding and placing letters in the Royal Mail system are part of the service, with letters delivered in 2-3 days.
