UK retailer Tesco is launching a six-week trial scheme at two of its supermarkets that will make it possible for customers to leave any packaging that they don’t want or feel is excessive at the store.
Tesco Extra stores in Guildford and Ilminster will participate in the pilot programme. It follows a Women’s Institute conservation campaign that was conducted four years ago.
The in-store recycling trial is one part of a larger initiative by Tesco that is looking for new ways to further promote the recycling of packaging materials and to streamline the packaging that consumers receive when purchasing items at their supermarkets.
According to the retailer’s beliefs, Tesco shoppers will take advantage of the opportunity to recycle packaging materials that is easy, immediate and at not cost to them. Through the in store recycling programme, Tesco believes that customers will make it clear to them and their suppliers the type and amount of packaging that is required – and what can be reduced or discontinued.
The new trial is Tesco’s latest scheme in its more than 3,500 recycling and waste reduction projects, which to date have been credited with diverting around 87 per cent of the retailer’s waste from landfill.
