A recycler based in North East England has won the supply contract to provide Marks and Spencer with environmentally-friendly milk containers.

Greenstar WES, located in Redcar, east Cleveland, started to supply the recycled plastic flakes used in manufacturing the retailer’s milk containers about a month ago.

The recycler, which has a workforce of 70 at its plant in Wilton, developed the technology to convert plastic milk bottles discarded by consumers into food-grade recycled plastic.

Although numerous companies, including M&S, were already using recycled plastics, the material had to be treated at a series of sites around Europe. The Greenstar WES treatment process can be conducted at just the one site, in Redcar.

In order to ensure absolute safety, the system has been tested rigorously by standards institutes in the UK and Europe.

The M&S’s organic milk bottles contain at least 10 per cent recycled food-grade plastic, which is known as r-HDPE.

Nampak manufactures plastic bottles for M&S by converting flakes of r-HDPE, and the bottles are then filled with organic milk from the M&S range by Dairy Crest.

The founder and managing director of Greenstar WES, James Donaldson, said: “As far as we know, we are the world’s first company doing this, taking plastic bottles back and selling the plastic from them again commercially.”
