Since 2003, over £1 billion worth of waste has been recycled in Britain, according to a new report released by Recycle Now.
Thirty per cent of all waste in the UK was recycled in 2008, the Recycle Now report revealed, which is nearly twice the amount recycled just five years ago.
The value of all the glass, metal, paper and plastic sent for recycling in the UK since 2003 is estimated to be £1.1 billion, and additional amounts have been saved in landfill costs.
In England alone, the amount of waste recycled since 2003 has reach 34 million tonnes – which would have cost taxpayers £1.8 billion if it had been sent to landfill.
Laura Underwood, speaking on behalf of Recycle Now, said: “Recycling is a success story and it’s having a major impact. We’ve saved 30 million tons of CO2 which is the same as taking a third of our cars off UK roads for a year.”
During the past year, household in Britain recycled 8.0 billion steel food cans, 3.3 billion aluminium cans, 2.1 billion wine bottles and 6.6 billion newspapers.
It has been reported that if placed end-to-end, the aluminium cans alone would circle the world ten times, and that the steel in the food cans in the equivalent of seven times the amount of steel using in the construction of Wembley Stadium.
