New Earth Solutions is suggesting some ways for local councils across the UK to meet waste management challenges.
According to the waste recycling firm, building capacity for waste management is possible even in the recession. If local authorities do not increase recycling they will face penalties through the progressive landfill tax regime, making recycling options more attractive.
The industry in the UK is facing challenges, however. A major challenge is coming up with the required capital to construct new plants, given current credit constraints. Another issue is the amount of time required for obtaining planning permission and contracts from local authorities.
Peter Mills, the commercial director for New Earth Solutions, says that the answer for smaller firms is to build plants in modules, beginning on a small scale and adding additional capacity as it becomes required and financial feasible.
New Earth Solutions was founded by Bill Riddle, formerly an operator of a landfill site. The firm uses mechanical biological treatment for the processing of waste, extracting aluminium through eddy current separation, metals through magnetic separation and plastics by means of infrared optical scanning.
Food waste is turned into compost after sorting through a density separation process.
New Earth currently has 50,000-ton waste facilities in both Dorset and Kent and is planning 36 more locations by 2012.
