Unveiling of Cartridge World’s Carbon Zero BTCC Cars.

We were at Rockingham Motor Speedway Circit yesterday (19th March 2009) to see the official unveiling of The British Touring Cars Championship’s (BTCC) 2009 entry list.

What has this got to do with Recycle.co.uk and recycling?  Well, we were there to see Cartridge World Carbon Zero Racing team unveil their two SEAT Leon cars which will be run completely Carbon Zero - the first motor racing team in Europe to do so!

They have recruited the driving skills of Dan Eaves - the only driver to date to have won all 3 BTCC races in one Meeting (Thruxton 2005) and Adam Jones who finished 3rd in the 2008 series in the independent standings.

The cars will be run on Bio-Ethanol which will make them environmentally friendly and have reduced emissions.  When asked how this affects the performance of the cars Eaves said “It actually gives the car more power than petrol does but you do use more of it.  You are heavier at the start of the race than the other cars but this is the only down side to it”

The team will then be offsetting any residual Carbon Footprint through the Carbon Management Company - co2balance.com.

Co2balance.com will be helping the Cartridge World Carbon Zero team reduce their emissions and will then offset any residual emissions to make the team fully Carbon Zero!  As the company is the only carbon management company that own and manage their offsetting projects, it gives them control over their project, which include among other projects, the replacement of fuel intensive open fires in African villages with Energy Efficient Stoves.

Cartridge World are naturally thrilled to be sponsoring the team as this helps strengthen their unwavering commitment towards the environment and mission to prevent millions of empty printer cartridges form being sent to land fill sites.

Recycle.co.uk plans to follow the team throughout the 2009 season to see how they do and will keep you updated.  The first race will take place at Brands Hatch on the 4th and 5th of April.  Could this be the beginning of something truly fantastic in a sport that is not normally associated with environmental awareness?  We hope so!
