Waste generating power at abandoned landfill

A disused County Durham landfill site will be powering as many as 4,000 homes by turning landfill gas into electricity.

The Todhills landfill, located near Bishop Auckland, has not received waste since 2007, but has been given a new life, with gas wells installed on the site for the purpose of generating energy.

CLP Envirogas, the landfill gas and renewable energy company, has been joined by Premier Waste Management and Northern Electric, on the new project.

In the process, gas is extracted from the landfill under suction and then piped back to a small power generation compound situated at the edge of the site.

Two containerised landfill gas-powered generators will be used in the compound, with each capable of generating approximately 1,000kW of electricity.

Michael Curry, Premier Waste Management’s environmental systems manager, said: “Waste management is an on-going challenge not only within the UK but also on a global basis, and therefore Premier is committed to finding new ways of recycling waste, which will benefit the environment.

Curry went on to say: “The capping and restoration programme at Todhills is an extremely valuable method of generating renewable energy, as emissions from the generators are over 20 times less harmful to the atmosphere than landfill gas itself, so this process will be improving local emissions significantly, which is great for our region.”
