SolidWorks 3D CAD was chosen by Cambridge-based Consul UK to design and develop an £8 million recycling plant, for which it will need to address complex technical issues and meet demanding deadlines.
Recycling has been acknowledged as one of the most effective means of reducing the consumption of energy and cutting carbon emissions. In addition, proponents note that recycling preserves many scarce natural resources and reduces the dependence on landfill. Design and manufacturing firms must meet these expectations when planning recycling facilities, and in the case of electric and electronic recycling, they must be in compliance with the UK’s WEE Directive – which aims not only to promote recycling, but also to limit the amount of electrical and electronic equipment that is produced.
South Wales-based SIMS Metal Management is a global leader in electronics and metals recycling. To meet increasing demand, they have commissioned a new £8 million recycling facility, and have placed part of the development project with Consul UK.
“This was a fast paced project and the goalposts moved constantly throughout its duration,” said Consul UK’s managing director, Phil Wetton. “SolidWorks gave us the ability to respond to the changes quickly and to meet the exceptionally tight timescales involved. We have been dealing with a large volume of equipment, so some of the new features in SolidWorks 2009 such as ‘Speedpak’ enabled us to work with large assemblies on a laptop.”
