The results of a new survey conducted by Carrentals.co.uk, a car hire comparison website, show that drivers no longer feel safe on roads in the UK and also that more than 40 per cent of motorists have been car crime victims.
More than 1,000 UK motorists participated in the survey, and one in five indicated they did not feel safe on the nation’s roads. Almost 50 per cent said that drivers were becoming more aggressive and one-third felt that motorists drive too fast.
The managing director of Carrentals.co.uk, Gareth Robinson, said: “The findings of the survey are staggering, and show just how concerned many people are about their safety on the roads. The fact that 40% of respondents said they had been a victim of car crime, shows the extent of the problem, and we feel more needs to be done to educate drivers on what to do if they find themselves in trouble on the roads.”
According to the survey more men have been victims of car crime than women. Forty-eight per cent of men reported that they had been victims, compared with 33 per cent of women. The age group most affected was those 31 years of age and older.
When asked about the likelihood of getting help on UK roads from other drivers if they needed it, only one-third of the respondents said they felt other drivers would stop to help them if they were in trouble.
When the questioned was turned around and respondents were asked if they would offer help to a driver in trouble, 55 per cent of men and 30 per cent of women said they would.
