A website that was launched to help people recycle their unwanted items as opposed to throwing them away has marked three years of success in Redditch.
Redditchfreecycle.org.uk is one of the most active online sites providing a means for residents of the West Midlands to keep thousands of items out of landfill each week.
The site set up is straightforward in that it matches those with unwanted items with those who have a use for them.
Co-founder of the Redditch group, Andy Griffin, noted: “Three years ago, we never dreamed that Redditch Freecycle could ever be as successful as it is today. We now have over 6,500 members and we estimate that Redditch Freecycle saves approximately 10 tonnes of usable items from landfill each month.”
Membership in the online community is free of charge and is open to anyone with something they are considering throwing away.
Items offered range from books to electronics and furniture, and even the occasional out building.
“In the current economic crisis and with landfill space diminishing fast, the free service provided by Freecycle is more important than ever,” Griffin added. “If there’s something you need, it’s well worth trying the site before you spend your money. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the quality and amount of items up for grabs.”
