Veolia reassures residents that bins are recycled

Waste contractor Veolia has been reassuring Sheffield city residents that all materials they place in the blue and green bins are being recycled.

The recycler has spoken out after it was reported in the media that some contractors in the UK are sending collected materials to incinerators and landfill due to the economy-related collapse of the recycling market.

Veolia’s managing director in Sheffield, said: “Residents should continue to ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ during the busy Christmas and New Year period with all the existing arrangements for handling recyclable materials operating as normal.”

He went on to say: “Green bin garden waste is processed for composting at Aldwarke recycling site. Paper and card collected from the blue bins is taken to our Materials Recovery Facility in Beighton for processing. All paper is sent to mills based in the UK for recycling.”

According to the company’s executive, Veolia is preparing “contingency plans” for the handling of recyclable materials should market conditions worsen, but he stressed: “Incineration or landfill is not being considered.”
