The Scottish town of Rothesay has taken yet another prize at the annual Beautiful Scotland awards. The “Special Endeavour” prize was awarded to Rothesay for being considered to be one of the “cleanest, most sustainable and most beautiful communities in the country”.
In August, Judges Keith Vernon and Colin Ainsworth travelled to Rothesay to take a tour of the town’s high points, which included stops at Fyne Homes’ recycling projects, the new community garden in Bridgend Street, the gardens on Rothesay’s esplanade and at Ardencraig, the Meadows Road allotments, and the Green Tree Café.
The judges determined that “Rothesay, set in its stunning position with its extensive views, has an undoubted appeal”.
“The promenade gardens and Ardencraig Gardens show an excellence not often seen. The local housing associations are a catalyst for recycling and undertake these duties in Rothesay and further afield across the island.
“The pleasure that folk have for living in Rothesay showed with residents own initiatives for recycling. The Bute Healthy Living Project displayed a commendable usage of their own produce from allotment to plate as well as a valuable educational initiative.
“The commitment to gap site projects seen by the judges, especially the Bridgend project and Lade landscaping, is hoped the beginning of other schemes which have multi agency cooperation.”
John Summers OBE, chief executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “Beautiful Scotland celebrates the communities which are working to improve and enhance their local areas through environmental education, recycling, and encouraging litter-free environments as well as horticulture.”
