Green Bin Scheme Launches in Pool and Otley

The communities of Otley and Pool-In-Wharfedale have been selected to participate in a fortnightly green bin recycling pilot scheme. Residents will be some of the first to experience the new scheme and Leeds City Council is hoping that the more frequent collections will help to increase recycling rates. To date, the council only collected recyclables once a month. The programme goes into effect at the end of October.

Councillor Barry Anderson (Adel, Con and Wharfedale) hopes the programme will expand across the entire region.

He said: “I’m pleased that we’re getting a chance to pilot this in Adel and Wharfedale and very pleased that Pool has been selected, because it has certainly been an area that has volunteered to go for fortnight green bin collections.

“My only concern is that they can match the expectations of local residents by actually collecting them on a fortnightly basis.

“Letters should be going out to residents in the next week or so explaining the change.

“The trial period is for 12 months. We’re trying to make sure that it will work and that recycling will actually increase significantly.

“As a council we’re getting up to 30 per cent of our waste being recycled, which is excellent, but we have a target of 52 per cent so there’s still work to do.

“If it’s a success we could see fortnightly green bin collections city-wide.

“In Pool, specifically, we also need to find a location for a glass recycling area, because at the moment residents have to travel to a supermarket in Otley.

“My preferred option would be in the car park of Wharfedale Court, once its refurbishment is complete.”
