Falmouth Introduces Battery Recycling

Falmouth residents are promoting a new battery recycling programme with the hope that it will find its way into the standard kerbside recycling scheme.

Falmouth Residents Association members have taken it upon themselves to put recycling collection containers in the Moor and Boslowick post offices. The group hopes that the containers will encourage people to recycle their used batteries.

Association secretary Elizabeth Hewlett said that group developed the idea after hearing about a similar programme started by residents in Portscatho. The Residents Association wanted to give it a try in Falmouth.

“It has been in the post office for a few days and it’s already quite full, so I think it is going to be a success. There is also another one at Boslowick,” Hewlett said.

Mrs Hewlett explained that the batteries will be collected from the post offices by two volunteers and be taken to SITA UK’s recycling plant at United Downs in St Day.

The new scheme has been funded by the Falmouth town council. The council and the Residents Association are working together to “spur on” the Carrick district council to follow suit.

Mike Varney, town mayor, said: “I just think it is a fantastic initiative and I know the town council and myself are extremely delighted to support something like this.”

The initiative is being introduced during ‘Climate Friendly Fortnight’, when numerous events will be held across Cornwall to educate the public about the importance of saving the environment.
