The Prince of Wales’ UK Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change has contacted the leaders of Britain’s three major political parties, saying that “action cannot be delayed” regardless of other political and economical factors. According to the group, Britain must adopt the 2009 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The new framework requires that carbon emissions must be reduced by 30 per cent by 2020. The current ratio remains at 20 per cent.
It also asks the government for a “comprehensive package of policy measures to change every major sector of the economy”.
The members of the Leaders Group are quite notable and include chief executives from companies like Kingfisher, Centrica, Tesco, and Johnson Matthey.
Lucy Neville-Rolfe, group director of corporate and legal affairs at Tesco, commented: “Government and businesses are interdependent on climate change and we must work together to engage consumers - saving energy, recycling and conserving resources.”
The letter is specific about the direction the government should take in regards to environmental issues. The leaders call for significant progress on “greener forward procurement commitments”, support for industries involved the manufacture of low-carbon products and technologies, major investments to build the infrastructure on a number of projects, and additional efforts to improve the country’s energy efficiency standards.
“While the climate change bill and strong, binding targets represent a crucial framework for emissions reduction, they will not in themselves reduce emissions,” the letter states.
“We now urgently need cross party effort to develop a comprehensive package of policy measures to change every major sector of the economy.”
