Corus Steel Packaging Recycling is often referred to as the UK’s “centre of expertise” regarding recycling steel packaging. The company recently published its annual Packaging Recovery Notes (PRN) report. Among the highlights of the report are the “significant achievements and benefits” made to the company’s recycling infrastructure in 2007.
PRNs are required by packaging chain companies so that they have evidence that the legal responsibilities for recovery and recycling are documented. PRNs can be purchased from accredited recycling operators.
The report, titled ‘Moving Forward in Recycling’, also reveals how Corus invested PRN funds as a means to boost steel packaging recycling rates. The plan worked and the rates shot up to an unprecedented 69% in 2007. The report also addressed key industry topics such as climate change, carbon reduction, retailer packaging initiatives.
David Williams, Manager of Corus Steel Packaging Recycling, says:
“With the UK’s steel packaging recycling rate having already surpassed the European packaging recycling target of 54% two years early, the challenge now is to continue this momentum through to 2010 and beyond.
“Our priorities are to maintain record recycling levels for steel, and to ensure that as many people as possible recognise that steel is a sustainable, successful and long-term packaging solution. The work of our Research and Development Department and the continued strategic application of PRN funds for improving recycling infrastructure and investing in technology to ensure cleaner materials with a minimum ferrous content of 92% will help to ensure that our previous achievements in this field continue.”
