Culcheth Primary is has teamed up with Fones4Schools, the UK’s foremost mobile phone recycling scheme. The purpose of the partnership is to raise funds needed to pay for improvements to the school environment.
Students, staff members and volunteers will collect unused mobile phones which will be sent off for recycling. The phones collected can be of any make, model or condition. Fones4Schools will pay the school £300 for every 200 old mobiles they collect. Every student who collects a used phone will be eligible for prizes.
After receiving the used phones, Fones4Schools recycles the mobiles or refurbishes the ones in decent condition. The refurbished phones are often sent to developing countries where phone service is unreliable, or in some cases, non-existent.
Fones4Schools Operations Manager Suzy Kelsall said: “We have more than 6,000 schools, nurseries and youth organisations who have already taken part in the scheme and they have received close to £1 million in cash donations and prizes in 18 months.
“With an estimated 15 million phones upgraded every year, there are plenty of mobiles gathering dust, which could be turned in to cash and prizes.”
Although members and friends of the school are going out and actively collecting phones, area residents are also encouraged to participate and may drop off used phones at the school. For those interested in donating, phones can be dropped off at the reception desk at Culcheth Primary located on Warrington Road, from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, during term time.
