It seems clear that people still need a fair amount of incentive in order to recycle their old mobile phones. The Consumer Electronic Association has estimated that nearly 15.4 million phones were taken to landfill last year and with people trading in phones on an average of every 18 months many of those phones still work just fine. Obviously, living in a “disposable” society is hurting us more than we realise.
There are so many people and places, from recyclers to charitable organisations, that are willing to take old mobile phones for recycling, and a great number of companies pay for old phones. Two standout companies have made it even easier for people to recycle.
Gazelle.com is an online technology trade-in service invested in creating a greener world. The company has been featured on the Today show, CNNMoney, and many other notable programmes to impress upon viewers the importance of recycling. Gazelle.com is partnered with more than one recycler, including ReCellular. Additionally, Carbonrally.com is involved with a new programme called Ringtone Revival. The programme is designed to measure the progress of those participating in a series of challenges geared toward carbon reduction. The programme is fairly straightforward: Carbonrally encourages people to call others before they throw away their old mobile phones. Mobile phones don’t actually create a carbon footprint but are still hazardous when tossed into a landfill. To prevent this from happening, Carbonrally gives each competing team a credit equalling 94 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions for each used mobile phone that they collect and then donate, recycle, or sell.
