Closed Loop Recycling is planning to open a £12m recycling centre and expects the new facility, located in Flintshire, to create approximately 50 jobs. Once in operation, the new plant is expected to be capable of processing 50,000 tonnes of plastic water, milk and soft drink bottles each year, converting the recycled materials into new food packaging products.
Funding for the plant’s construction came from a combination of private investors, such as the Foresight Group, an alternative asset manager, and public funds from the Welsh Assembly Government’s newly introduced Single Investment Fund.
Closed Loop already maintains a presence in London. Company officials believe that the U.K. is in the midst of a “recycling revolution”.
Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones, said: “The company’s state-of the-art facility at Deeside will make a major contribution to our ability to recycle plastic, which saves natural resources, reduces carbon and delivers real action on climate change.”
Although the plant is not scheduled to be in full operation until October 2009, many large companies have already committed to buying their recycled plastics from Closed Loop. Among those companies is international soft drink giant, Coca Cola Enterprises and Solo Cup Europe.
Closed Loop Recycling’s managing director, Chris Dow, said: “This plant will allow us to make a real impact to plastic recycling in north Wales and North West England and we are delighted to have such positive support from the Welsh Assembly Government.”
He added: “We believe we are pioneering the future in packaging solutions.”
