A recent programme held in Chicago for mobile phone recycling was titled, “Tossed aside - what a waste”. Now another scheme has come to the surface to benefit senior citizens. The programme, Cell Phones for Seniors, has been in effect since 2006 and has recently seen a re-emergence in activity. There are over 10,000 senior citizens in the Chicago area that have been recipients of used cell phones. The phones do not come with service but all phones are able to dial emergency services. This allows seniors to call for help or to report suspicious activities in their neighborhoods. Everyone that signs up receives a phone, charger, and two batteries.
Donated phones that cannot be refurbished are sold to recycling centres.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Department is a big supporter of the programme and recently published an article in the Chicago Tribune written by Sheriff Thomas Dart. According to cookcountysheriff.org: “You might be surprised at the number of seniors who do not have even a home telephone, due to their limited budgets. You may be providing the only outlet for a senior citizen to call for emergency service. The cell phones are free to seniors and can only be used to access 911 in case of an emergency.
Senior citizens who receive the free cell phone from the Sheriff’s Department will have a stronger sense of security when out in their cars, on public transportation or participating in outdoor activities. ”
