Northumberland County Council Still Happy with Recycling Service

Many residents in Northumberland County and elsewhere in the UK have been expressing a great deal of concern after the ITV scandal regarding residential recycling services. However, Northumberland County Council and SITA UK, its recycling and waste management firm, want to reassure residents that everything collected for recycling properly recycled or disposed of via reputable companies located in the UK.

Paul Jones, Northumberland County Council’s head of waste management, said: “I am absolutely confident about the contracts and arrangements that the county council and SITA UK have in place.

“Together, we insist that the pathway for all recyclable materials is perfectly clear and unambiguous, and we undertake regular checks to ensure that this is the case.

“The recycled materials that residents so dedicatedly collect and put out for collection and similar materials from household waste recovery centres is initially sorted and bulked up by SITA UK at various sites in the area.

“Then it is transported to a range of different reprocessing industries in the UK. Whenever we can, we try to locate businesses that are close to home, as this is not only better for the environment but also boosts the local economy and brings new jobs.

“A few materials have to be taken further a field. For example, waste oils go to a factory on Merseyside and the balance of paper goes to a specialist paper mill in Chester.

“The important fact is that we know where locally collected recycled materials come from and go to be re-used or reprocessed.
