Tetra Pak and the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK) have joined together to introduce a Business and Schools Carton Recycling Scheme. The scheme will encourage businesses and schools to contact local carton recycling facilities via the internet. Some of the local sites include: Bywaters, Shanks Waste Management, Recresco, and J&B Recycling. Businesses and schools can also utilise the scheme’s web portal to get quotes on recycling and arrange for collections.
It is estimated that England’s primary schools are responsible for the disposal of approximately 200 million milk and juice cartons per year. Secondary schools and support staff use about 35 million.
Tetra Pak recycling operations manager Fay Dashper said: “As an industry, we take our commitment to recycling very seriously and want to help people to reduce the waste they send to landfill.
“We look forward to seeing more schools and businesses getting involved, and urge every company and school to visit the website, see if their area is covered and start recycling cartons.”
What happens to the cartons after they are collected for recycling? They are baled and stored until a sufficient amount is collected at the regional hubs for recycling. Then the cartons are sent to the Orebro Mill located in Sweden. The cartons can be recycled and their materials reused to create many different products, from heavy duty envelopes to plasterboard liners to extra strength paper bags.
