Residents Fight against Quarry Development

More than 400 angry letters have been sent to Devon Council objecting to the redevelopment of a quarry in Buckfastleigh.

Lobbyists pushing for the denial of the proposal claim that the project would lower property values, irrevocably damage their quality of life, and spoil the town’s charm and character. The residents are also concerned that the high level of dust generated at the site will harm local wildlife, including that of the horseshoe bats and peregrine falcons.

Residents claim that the reopening of the quarry site as a recycling facility will “create mountains of dust and send lorries pounding down Plymouth Road every 15 minutes”. Sam Gilpin Demolition Ltd out of Newton Abbot is the company that proposed turning the abandoned quarry into a £2.7 million recycling site.

Officials from the demolition company argue that the site will not create an excessive amount of noise and the required machinery for the site will produce less noise than a local carriageway.

At a recent meeting of the Devon County Council Development Control Committee meeting, councillors took a vote to table any decisions on the project until the results of an environmental impact survey could be completed. The vote was unanimous.

County development manager Stuart Redding said: “There have been quite a lot of letters of objection and they are still coming in. We have had in excess of 200 letters of objection from organisations and in excess of 200 letters of objection from individuals. The petition has 500 signatures and it is still being added to.”

A decision is not expected until the end of the month at the earliest.
