Bulgarian Company Supports Mobile Recycling

Globul, Bulgaria’s #2 mobile company, has teamed up with Germanos Telecom Bulgaria to develop a mobile phone recycling programme. Together, the companies hope to take in five kg of used mobile phones, chargers, data cables, headsets, and other accessories.

This won’t be the first recycling programme of its kind in the area. Consumer electronics retailer 2be launched a similar programme recently and has collected approximately 1000 devices in the first six months of operation. The majority of those donating phones to the eco-cause used store credits to purchase new gadgets at a lower cost.

Globul Chief Executive Haris Kotsibos announced that the company has allocated 400,000 leva for the eco programme titled “Globul Green”.

Consumer awareness regarding mobile phone recycling is growing. Mobile phones that get thrown away and end up in landfills cause a number of problems for the environment. First of all, the plastics used in the manufacture of the phones would take hundreds of years to decompose in a landfill setting. Additionally, each mobile phone contains a number of hazardous elements such as mercury, cadmium, arsenic, lead, and more. These elements are prone to leaking out of the phone and into the soil when landfilled, causing a ripple effect on the polluting of ground water and the food chain. Lastly, mobile phones contain valuable materials that can be recycled or reused, thereby preserving previous resources and reducing waste.
