Computer Recycling Gets Rave Reviews in Texas

San Marcos Texas is just one of the many locations in which the Goodwill Reconnect program is in effect. The program, in conjunction with Dell, accepts and refurbishes used computers for resale in its retail stores. All Dell items being donated for use at Goodwill can be picked up free of charge. Other brands can be recycled for free with a new Dell product purchase or for a small handling fee.

Goodwill is a not-for-profit organisation which provides jobs and services for people with developmental disabilities. The program operates in all fifty states and has seen great success with the Reconnect program.

This service is especially needed since the passing of a new state law regarding the recycling and disposal of electronic waste, also known as e-waste. Texas was the fourth state to pass a recycling law regarding electronics. Others have since followed suit.

A recent article in the San Antonio Express-News stated, “A state law passed last year that went into full effect Monday mandates that PC makers take back old computers, keyboards, monitors, mice, and other parts.”

The article mentioned “Electronics waste recycling has become a huge problem in the US., with only 18 percent of all discarded computers, monitors and other equipment recycled annually according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.”

The EPA reports, “Recycling 1 million desktop computers prevents the release of greenhouse gases equivalent to the annual emissions of over 17,000 passengers cars.”

The Reconnect program in San Antonio recycles nearly 70,000 computers per year. The scheme also processes about “… 20,000 pounds of computers, monitors and other items each month.”
