Schools Compete in Recycling Programme

Basildon Council has joined together with the Essex-based “Go Green 4 Schools Campaign” to launch a recycling competition. Kids are encouraged to participate in a plastic bottles recycling competition to see which school can collect the most bottle per student. The winning school will receive a solar powered weather station and a £3,000 eco-garden. Schools that are runners up will also receive solar powered weather stations. The weather stations will teach students how to monitor various weather patterns, temperature, humidity, wind speeds, and precipitation.

Terri Sargent, Basildon Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “This is a brilliant chance for schools to win a prize which will produce a lot of fun as well as encouraging youngsters to learn more about the world around them.

“All those taking part will get a lot out of the competition and perhaps pick up new ideas on how to go green and set up special projects for their own schools.”

The eco-garden will be designed specifically for the schools, featuring a diverse grouping of plants and trees. A professional horticulturist will visit the schools to determine the atmosphere and needs of each location. The items selected are targeted toward encouraging the local wildlife. Additionally, there will be hedgehog houses, nesting sites, ladybird shelters,

The eco-friendly garden will consist of a wide variety of different plants and trees, bird feeders, frog and toad houses, and even a solar powered fountain and a birdbath.
