Earlier this summer, Red Rhino held a quarterly seminar entitled “Onsite Recycling of Construction Waste”. The focus of the meeting was the onsite recycling of waste throughout the construction industry.
Recent studies have shown that the construction industry is responsible for more than 32% of the UK’s total waste. Those same reports have revealed that over 30% of those discarded materials can be recycled or reused. The size of the construction industry in the UK means that more than 60 million tonnes of construction site waste is sent to the landfill annually.
One of the main points of the day was to educate the participants about onsite recycling. Not only does it save resources and divert waste from landfill but onsite recycling also saves a tremendous amount of money. Red Rhino created a demonstration showing how materials and monies could be saved through reducing and recycling site waste. Participants could see a range of crushers in action at the factory. The seminar also offered opportunities for people to network.
There were several speakers throughout the day, addressing various issues including WRAP protocol, waste management, and the benefits of onsite demolishing of construction waste. The speakers included Mr Graham Bishop from the Wales Environment Trust, Principal Consultant Kathy Morrisey from WSP Environmental Ltd, and keynote speaker C & D Consultancy owner and civil engineer John Woodward.
Red Rhino Marketing Manager Marelize Campbell said: “The day was very successful and the level of interest was unexpected. We therefore have decided to hold similar seminars in the near future where related industries can learn more about the latest regulations and trends, and can also freely ask questions and get informative answers.”
