Since 1993, Sierra Wireless, a Canadian company that produces wireless aircards for laptops and mobile devices, has been interested in helping maintain the environment in which we live. The company’s aircards allow communication between mobile devices such as laptops to access the internet over cellular networks. While not a traditional mobile phone, these devices nonetheless do, by necessity, contain a number of harmful chemicals.
Because of this, it’s important that, when the time comes to upgrade your aircard you do it responsibly. Sierra offers a number of recycling options, many of which are free to the customer. In Europe, the EU has developed an anti-pollution measure called The Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment measure. This measure is enforced in all EU nations, requires that all mobile phone manufacturers pay for the collection of all mobile phones and mobile devices. When it comes to recycling mobile phones, the EU leads the world in enforcement of these necessary measures, ensuring the as much waste as possible is kept from landfills.
Because of this measure by the EU, companies that do business in EU countries treat their recycling programs a bit differently. Instead of having to send you mobile phone off to a third party company you simply call Sierra, for example, and tell them that you want to recycle your mobile. They will mail you a self-addressed stamped envelope, and you simply have to return it with your mobile inside. Companies such as Sierra often offer incentives in the form of product credits, meaning that you may qualify for a discount on your new mobile device if you recycle through the company.
