As millions of pounds of mobile phones are thrown into the bin annually, it becomes more and more important to properly dispose of our electronics. Over a billion mobiles are purchased each year, and the majority of the old phones go in the rubbish. Cell phones contain large amounts of toxic chemicals which can leech into the soil over time, polluting the surrounding areas.
For the millions of mobile phone users who will purchase a new mobile this year, it is important that old phones be disposed of properly. Sewon, a Korean manufacturer of mobile phones, doesn’t offer an in-house recycling program. They rely on the end-user to recycle their own electronics. Thankfully, many websites, such as TalkGreen are cropping up, filling the mobile phone recycling void.
With the lack of a manufacturer-sponsored mobile phone recycling program, Sewon users have to express a bit of their ingenuity when searching for a safe, eco-friendly way to dispose of their old mobiles. By contacting a local recycling centre, or contacting one of the companies who purchase old mobile phones for recycling for cash, a consumer can receive an envelope in the mail which will allow them to send their phone off to be recycled. Once the company receives the cell phone, they either sell it at a discounted rate to those who may not otherwise be able to afford one, or they break them down into their component parts, extracting the gold, silver, cadmium, palladium, and untold other metals from the device. This is separated out, and sold on its own merit.
