Some mobile phone manufactures have been slow to embrace the need for mobile phone recycling but that is not the case with electronics giant LG. Known for sleekly designed appliances, televisions, and computers, LG has become the one of the industries top mobile phone manufactures. This prominent position has given LG exactly what it needs to promote mobile phone recycling.
In late 2007 the Mobile Phone Take-Back program was launched by LG. This program put hundreds of drop off boxes in high traffic locations across the globe. In the United States LG also launched a mail in service where customers can recycle old mobile phones through the mail. This convenient service saves consumers from the hassle of trying to locate the nearest drop off location.
You might be wondering why it’s so important to recycle your phone. There are many ways old phones are reused. In some cases parts of the phone such as the keypad and camera can be inserted into other devices and used for repair. In other cases pieces of the housing and battery are melted down and reused again to create new mobile phones. Some of these phones may even be refurbished and sold at a lower price. One of the main reasons recycling mobile phones is so important in today’s society is because of the harmful toxins that make up the battery and battery terminals on the device. Over time these components degrade and can contaminate the soil and water. Recycling mobile phones is a great alternative to leaving thousands in landfills.
