Less than a quarter of all mobile phones that are no longer in use are recycled each year. This waste, also, known as ewaste is creating and environmental problem as cell phones begin to degrade and decompose in landfills. Due to the lack of awareness on recycling mobile phones major cellular providers and manufacturers such as Ericsson have began to look for innovative ways to get the message of mobile phone recycling out.
In April 2008 Ericsson sponsored a women’s tennis tournament in South Carolina where they asked guests to bring their old cell phones for donation. These phones were then sent for mobile recycling by a local women’s group. Money made from the recycling donation of these phones was given to the group. This program helped to raise awareness for mobile phone recycling as well as raised money for local charities and businesses.
Instead of throwing that old phone in the trash or hiding it away in the closet locate a recycling center near your home. These drop-off locations give consumers a place to turn in their mobile devices for phone recycling. As mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency these recycling centers must dispose of these devices and their batteries in accordance to the laws. Drop off locations can be found by visiting the EPA website or contacting a local mobile phone seller. If recycling facilities are not available in your area there are several online sources that will aid you win sending in that old mobile phone to help create a better tomorrow.
