Recycle Waste Devon County Council Recycling Program

In Devon, there is a great recycling program provided by Devon County Council, which is based on the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.  The amount of waste that you create can be REDUCED by purchasing foods that have less packaging, that have less disposable items, communicating electronically instead of receiving junk mail, and doing home composting.  You can also REUSE products such as containers, rechargeable batteries, and by taking goods that you don’t want anymore to boot sales or charity shops.  Items that can be RECYCLED include: plastics, paper, glass, metal, and textiles.

During the 2007/08 year, Devon County Council recycled just over 49% of household waste in the area, and if even more people help the environment by recycling, Devon County Council will achieved a composting and recycling rate of 53% by 2010.  Plus, by 2015 they could recycle 60% of household waste and 65% by 2025.

The Recycling Centres that are provided by Devon County Council are for disposing of bulky household waste only.  However, cardboard and garden waste is excepted but for a fee.  The council does provide a special collection service for bulky items, which will need to be arranged if you aren’t able to access one of the centres.

Households aren’t the only ones who are provided services for recycling, as Devon County Council also provides these services to small businesses as well.  Certain Recycling Centres will accept cardboard and green waste from businesses, which will save them the cost and time for transporting the materials to a landfill that is further away.  Recycling these items will help protect the environment, instead of just throwing them out, and it also reduces pollution and saves energy.
