Recycle Waste Swansea City Council Recycling Program

Each year the residents of the United Kingdom produce over one tonne of waste. Most of this waste goes to local landfills where it is buried. Unfortunately, the UK is running out of landfill space and they are running out fast. With this in mind the government has mandated that by 2010 all communities must recycle at least 50% of household waste. Those not meeting the standard will be assessed higher landfill taxes and may be fined.

In Swansea, kurbside collection is king when it comes to recycling. Every two weeks the waste management services will collect properly sorted and labeled bags for recycling when they pick up the traditional household waste. Collecting all waste, recyclable or not, at one time makes it much less time consuming. Simply placing the bags at kurbside before 7 am will insure that they are properly disposed of.

Food waste and garden waste is collected from some in the Swansea area. Garden waste such as grass clippings or dead plants can be placed in the approved bags for collection. Swansea is one of only a handful of districts that provide food waste disposal services. It’s important to remember that all kitchen waste will be accepted unless it contains meat, fish, bones, or plastic wrapping. In addition to these services the Swansea Home Composting Campaing provides home composting bins at 60% less than retail cost. Composted materials make excellent fertilizer for vegetable and flower gardens. The specialized bins make the dirty job of composting simple.
