In Wrexham County Borough the average home produces nearly one tonne of waste each year. In order to say below the landfill limit set for the borough the council has implemented many recycling programs. These programs are designed to get all residents involved in waste reduction.
Recycle with Michael is the recycling scheme used by the council of Wrexham County. Michael a cartoon child helps residents learn what types of materials can go in their kurbside collection bins. Reusable green sacks are provided for the disposal of paper goods like newspaper and junk mail. The plastic bin provided is to be used for clean foil, cans and aerosols, glass bottles, and plastic bottles. The provided green bin is used for garden and lawn waste such as dead flowers and grass clippings. The final bin which is grey is to be used for all other materials that cannot be recycled in the kurbside program.
Some residents of the area have not been included in the kurbside program because they either live in flats or their homes are not suitable for the collection program. Those residents can participate in recycling by taking their items to the household recycling centers or to one of the recycling banks in the county.
Other ways to reduce waste include home composting and participation in the real nappies campaign. The real nappies campaign encourages parents to use real diapers rather than nonbiodegradable disposable nappies. In the first three years of a child’s life they can use up to 6000 nappies.
