The Western Isles region of Scotland is working to reduce household waste in a number of ways. Based on recent statistics most homes in the UK produce more than one tonne of waste each year and we are quickly running out of usable landfill space. Waste reduction programs in the Western Isles include kurbside collections, recycling banks, and public awareness programs.
A majority of those residing in the Western Isles participate in the kurbside collection program. A green wheelie bin is provided to all residents who live in a kurbside collection approved area. This bin is collected on a fortnightly basis and is used for items made of paper, plastic, and glass. Homes not suitable for kurbside service may place glass, plastic, and cans in one of the local recycling banks. All materials are taken to a sorting facility and then sent to companies that turn old goods into new products.
Organic waste is also collected via kurbside services. Residents with one of the large grey bins with a yellow sticker can put garden waste and many other household items in the bin. Some things that can be put in the bin include vacuum cleaner waste, soil, cardboard, wood shavings, and grass clippings. These materials are composted at a local facility and are often sold back to the residents for use in the vegetable gardens.
If you do your part the amount of waste the Western Isles produces can be cut in half. It just takes a little time.
