Recycle Waste West Lothian Council Recycling Program

In 2001 the West Lothian council began a recycling program as a trail and with its success the council decided to expand the service to all residents whose homes were in areas the lift truck could access. Today thousands of homes take advantage of the kurbside programs in West Lothian.

The recycling scheme for West Lothian is simple. All recyclables are placed into a large blue wheelie bin. Residents can choose from three sizes depending on their needs. All bins are provided free of charge and homes that need more than one just have to make a request. Items placed in the blue bin are taken to a local center where they are sorted and sent to companies that turn old used products into new items.

Brown bins are also very popular in West Lothian. These bins are also provided free of charge and residents can have as many as they need to get the job done. Brown bins are used to collect garden waste and select kitchen waste for composting. All material collected from brown bins is taken to a municipal composting site that resells the compost to the community. Those who choose not to participate in the brown bin collection service often have their own compost pile at home. Plants and other garden waste are composted in specialized bins to make the process easier. The compost material is then added to the soil as a fertilizer.
