In 2004 the West Dunbartonshire area of Scotland produced over 60,000 tonnes of waste from households alone. By the end of 2008 the district is required to meet a mandate of recycling 30% of the waste produced. In an effort to meet the mandate several programs have been established in the district to educate and aid residents in reducing their household waste.
Recycling through kurbside collection and recycling banks is one of the big programs at work in West Dunbartonshire. Residents are provided with a large bin in which to place plastic bottles, glass jars, and paper products. Those without access to kurbside services can bring their recyclables to one of the many public recycling banks or directly to the recycling center for proper disposal.
While recycling is important it’s also important the United Kingdom residents reduce waste by purchasing smartly. Everyone loves a great deal but usually inexpensive items have to be replaced more often. Spending a few extra Pounds on a better quality product will not only reduce waste, it will save you money in the long run. Choosing to shop with reusable carrier bags is another great way to reduce household waste.
Parents with small children are encouraged to participate in the Real Nappies Program. It’s estimated that within the first three years of their lives babies will go through nearly 5000 nappies. Disposable nappies may be convenient but they are also costly and don’t break down over time. Those who use real cloth nappies are saving money and helping the environment.
