Parents love to spoil their children by giving them a lot of toys, especially at christmas and on their birthdays. Toys accumulate over the years and then get forgotten when the children grow up. Damaged and partly damaged toys almost always end up in landfills, adding their own bulk and weight to these overflowing landfills. Of course, some of them are non-biodegradable, especially those made from plastic. These discarded toys do their own damage to the environment.
This need not be the case now because old toys can now be recycled. An additional benefit that recycling toys offers is that you can also involve your children in the project. The first thing that you should do is to let them sort out their toys into those they want to keep and those that they want to give away. Next, tell them to sort the “to give away toys” into usable and damaged. For those damaged toys that are no longer usable, you can send them to recycling plants. Plastic toys can be melted down and be reused again in the production of new toys, while the metal components of the toys are gathered to be reused also in other products. Lastly, send the usable toys to companies that accept these toys for donation to charities. These companies can also send these toys to developing countries.
