How To Recycle Polystyrene
Our modern world makes use of polystyrenes, or commonly known as Styrofoam, almost daily, and this is one of the materials that we cannot do without. For one, restaurants need polystyrenes for their takeout food covering. Polystyrenes are also used by most companies, especially companies that deal in electronics for when they ship their products. Most food containers are also made up of polystyrenes. Therefore, the fact cannot be denied that polystyrenes are one of the most usable and important materials today. But the use of polystyrenes gives us one major drawback. This material is not that recyclable as compared to other materials. Plus, once polystyrene-made products are damaged, its scrap value significantly lowers. Because of this, they almost always end up in landfills, taking up more space and adding to the pollution.
Fortunately, recycling plants are now able to recycle polystyrenes. They can be made back into new polystyrenes products like food containers, egg containers, disposable plates and cups, etc. These kinds of products are composed of only about 5% polystyrene, and what makes up for its bulk is mostly air. On the other hand, those that are made up of solid polystyrene can be recycled into plastic lumbar as well as molding trim. Solid polystyrene can also be made into toys and housing for your typical audio and videocassette. Television cabinets are also made from solid polystyrene.
Really, with the many uses recycled polystyrenes offer, we will notice a drop in our landfill volumes as more and more people are educated about the benefits of recycling polystyrenes.
