D: Recycling Art Workshops and Festival
TARU (Transforming Arts Regenerating Understanding) is a not for profit, environmentally friendly arts organisation, based in London. It specialises in providing a unique approach to educating children about managing waste through the mediums of music, dance, arts, crafts and fun.
It is currently running workshops in six schools in Thamesmead, South East London. Pupils provide the materials for the workshops by bringing in waste from home. The organisation focuses entirely on recycled products. This is the one of the largest projects of its kind in the UK. With the guidance and support from the TARU Team, the children transform the waste to make their own instruments, costumes and carnival puppets and floats. These then will be choreographed to create a fantastic carnival parade with over 400 children, held on 14th July, to open the 2007 Trust Thamesmead Annual Summer Festival. The workshops take place during this year’s Sustainability and Environment Weeks and provide a great insight into the project and the organisation.
