Green companies are all the rage these days. As more and more people become concerned about the environment it’s becoming apparent that everyone needs to do their part. From the manufacturer to the end user companies and individuals alike are going green in an effort to cut down on waste and reduce our impact on the planet. The Toshiba Corporation is proud of their Green Procurement program and encourages those with Toshiba brand laptop computers to do their part.

Toshiba offers those who are buying a new laptop two options for retiring their old device. The first option allows those with laptops that are still in working order to trade their old computers in for credit toward a new one. Depending on the age of the computer and the condition trade in values differ. The second option provides users with defunct laptop computers to send them back to Toshiba for proper disposal. Once Toshiba receives the device they will reuse as much of the device as possible for refurbishment. Components that cannot be reused will be disposed of in accordance to federal environmental laws.

The best part of the Toshiba laptop recycling program is that there is absolutely no cost to recycle the device. Toshiba wants to make the process as painless as possible and provides free disposal. Those whose devices are fit for trade in can print a postage paid shipping label. Toshiba’s laptop recycling program along with their focus on green manufacturing is one of the main reasons the company is among the top sellers of notebook computers worldwide.

Millions of pounds of electronic waste are disposed of each year but only a small percentage is recycled. Most consumers don’t realize there are recycling programs for everything from their mobile phone to their laptop computers. In order to get the word out about the impact of electronic waste companies like Sony are joining with waste management companies and developing in house programs to educate consumers.

Sony recently partnered with Waste Management, one of the largest waste removal companies, to provide safe disposal of unused Sony electronics. All a user has to do is take their Sony branded device to a Waste Management eCycling drop-off center. For those who do not have these centers in their area Sony offers other choices for recycling.

The Sony trade in program allows those who already own a Sony laptop computer to trade in their old device for credit towards a new Vaio laptop. The trade in program can be used in two different ways. The most popular way to trade in is to visit the company webpage. Through the page a buyer can find a new computer, calculate the trade in value of their old device, and apply to receive credit. The second way is to visit a Sony Style store. Once at the store the old computer will be assessed to determine the trade in value and a gift card will be provided for any Sony Style merchandise.

Instead of adding more to the landfill act responsibly and use the Sony laptop recycling programs.

Siemens was one of the first global companies to promote recycling of laptop computers. Over the past few years the company has grown and added new recycling programs that both aid and educate consumers about the importance of proper disposal.

In 2007 Siemens became one of several manufactures to install signage on their devices to remind consumers that their devices cannot be placed in the traditional waste bin. The signage is part of the WEEE compliance program being instituted throughout Europe.

Siemens was one of the first companies to provide a take back program. Consumers with older models can send their devices back to the company for credit toward a newer model. The program accepts all Siemens models along with any other manufacturer’s devices. Residents outside of Europe wishing to participate in the program can contact Siemens through the company website to arrange shipping. Those who do not wish to participate in the Siemens branded programs can dispose of their laptop computers through donation or by contacting their local waste removal provider for a list of options for responsible disposal.

Siemens outlook for the future is positive as the company moves to institute programs in other areas of the world. In 2008 the company is expanding take back and recycling programs into South Africa. This venture will make Siemens the first company to provide such services to the residents of South Africa.

Every year millions of computers are purchased by individuals and businesses. While ten years ago most of the computers being purchased were desktop models the sales of laptop computers have dramatically increased over the past few years. The allow us to work from anywhere and with the advances the devices are getting more and more lightweight and user friendly.

For those who purchased a Sharp branded laptop a few years back they are finding that it’s time to upgrade to a newer model that can do more and work faster. This leaves them with a question: What do I do with the old computer? A majority of people simply toss them in the garbage but environmental concerns are forcing most waste services to turn the computers away because they contaminate the earth.

If you own a Sharp laptop computer you can dispose of your device responsibly by computer recycling. Some manufactures offer take back programs that accept the computers regardless of who built the device. Through the company website you can arrange for shipping at no cost to you. For those with devices that are still in good working order consider donating your computer to a local group. Remember to remove any personal information from the computer and complete a system restore before donating so that someone does not get access to your personal information and use it against you.

Choosing to recycle your computer means a healthier environment for future generations.

For years consumers have been turning to Samsung for their mobile phones and laptop computers and beginning October 1, 2008 the company will start playing a major role in promoting the recycling of their devices.

Those that own a Samsung branded device such as a mobile phone or laptop computer will not be able to dispose of their electronic waste responsibly and in accordance with federal guidelines. The program known as Samsung Recycling Direct will partner the company with several vendors who will collect and recycle the devices. Any materials that can be reused will be removed from old devices for disposal. This cuts down on manufacturing parts for refurbished computers and phones.

Samsung will begin promoting their new program through a series of community events all sponsored by the company. The events will be used as a platform for educating consumers on the long term effects of electronic waste. In addition to the acceptance of Samsung branded devices the events will also accept devices from other companies. All Samsung devices will be accepted free of charge while a small fee will be required for those manufactured by other companies.

In coming months the company which offers appliances will be adding additional approved locations for the safe disposal of all home appliances.

Philips, one of the leading manufacturers of electronic devices, realizes that electronic waste is quickly becoming a top concern among environmentalists and that it is up to producers of electronics to educate consumers on their options for disposal. For this reason Philips has been offering an in house take back program since the mid 90’s. The program allows users to send their end of life products such as laptop computers back to the company for proper disposal.

Across the globe Philips is introducing take back programs and encouraging users to either donate or recycle devices when they are no longer of use to them. In many areas of the world donated products are used to provide computers and other types of media to those who would otherwise not have access to the equipment.

Depending on the country in which the owner of a Philips product resides the disposal procedures for electronic waste differ. Throughout Europe the WEEE program requires end of life products be deposited in specialized bins for disposal. In the US Philips has set up drop boxes for disposal of all items. When the electronics are disposed of they are first broken down into their component parts which can then be reused to refurbish broken computers and other electronics. All other pieces are disposed of in accordance with local laws.

It’s become apparent in the last few years that we aren’t doing enough to reduce waste. Countries are being forced to enact strict guidelines for waste management and some communities are making it compulsory to recycle. When it comes to laptop computers the Packard Bell Company, one of the largest manufactures in Europe, is taking action by partnering with the European Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment directive.

Beginning in 2005 Packard Bell began placing the WEEE logo on the underside of all their laptop computers. Placing the logo on the devices reminds users of Packard Bell devices that they are required to dispose of their computers responsibly. The WEEE logo is a wheelie bin with a line through it showing that the computer cannot be placed in the bin with the other rubbish. Depending on the community in which the person lives the disposal method for the computer differs. In some communities the computers can be taken to a Packard Bell seller for proper disposal while in other communities the WEEE has partnered with the waste management company to set up collection bins for old laptop devices.

In some cases the user upgrades to a new device before the old one is unusable. In this situation Packard Bell encourages donation of the device to a local group or community organization.

NEC computers are often used by corporations rather than individuals. Of course over time it becomes necessary to upgrade equipment for newer devices with faster processors and more memory. Understanding the need to responsibly dispose of older devices the NEC Corporation has introduced a plan to help with IT recycling.

The service known as UltraClean will accept laptop computers along with other computer peripherals from all manufacturers. Companies must simply contact NEC to arrange pick up and disposal services. In order to take advantage of the program a company must have at least 50 units to dispose of. Upon removal of the electronic waste NEC will ensure that all devices are disposed of in accordance with EU guidelines.

Besides the NEC UltraClean program there are a variety of ways to dispose of your electronic waste. In most European communities specialized recycling schemes are set up to accept electronic waste through either kerbside collection or through the use of a centrally located recycling bank. In some cases these services will only accept laptop batteries but in others they will take the entire computer. In addition to this option some businesses may offer to sell older devices to their employees at a reduced price. For the individual donating a device or selling it online through an auction site is also an option. If none of these services are available in your community you can always send your laptop back through one of NEC’s competitors who offer in house recycling take back programs.

Medion batteries have long been a staple in laptop computers. The problem comes when one tries to dispose of a Medion battery. Legally, batteries aren’t supposed to be dumped into a landfill, so it falls to the consumer to find suitable alternatives to throwing them away.

Thankfully, batteries are easily recyclable. Simply take the battery to your local recycling center, and they will provide you the opportunity to have the battery disposed of in a proper fashion. Lead, Copper, Nickel, Cadmium, and most of all lithium, are extremely dangerous substances that should never be allowed to leech into groundwater or soil. Proper battery recycling means that the harmful chemicals and heavy metals contained within the battery’s shell will never contact the natural environment.

Although Medion doesn’t list an in house program for batteries recycling them doesn’t have to be a chore. There are many companies, both online and in person, who will happily take them from you. Most of the online companies will even offer the opportunity to pay for your shipping and handling charges, allowing you to recycle cost-free! Programs such as these are able to break the batteries down safely, and sell off the components and the valuable parts within. Copper is particularly expensive at this time, and batteries often contain a large amount of it.

So, check with your local recycling centre to see if they offer a battery recycling program; if they do, you can do your civic duty while still helping save the planet.

It’s true that JVC offers many different types of electronic products. Ranging from radios to batteries, JVC has come to realize that their products could harm the environment if they are not disposed of properly.

Thankfully, JVC has partnered with the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Program to encourage all of their customers to recycle their electronic equipment. Batteries can either be sent to the manufacturer or, more conveniently, taken to your local recycling facility. Typically, local facilities will pay a premium for any merchandise brought to them.

The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation is dedicated to the safe disposal of otherwise dangerous batteries. The bottom line is that batteries contain many harmful chemicals and heavy metals. Gold, Copper, and Lithium are just a few of the compounds fund inside many batteries. With that in mind, its terribly important not to let the dangerous components of a battery leech into surrounding soil or water tables.

By disposing of a battery through recycling, you can ensure that the chemicals and heavy metals contained within the battery are kept safely at bay. They can be separated into their components, and sold piece-meal, but it takes skill and the proper equipment to do so.

Anyone wanting to recycle a JVC battery can do so by calling JVC directly at 800-8-Battery, or logging onto JVC’s website, which explains how to schedule a battery for collection. When contacting the company by phone or mail, you’ll need to provide your information in case the company needs to contact you in return.
