The Best Places in the World With the Cleanest Air

Warning: you might want to finish anything you are eating before you read the opening paragraph of this article. Spend a day walking around any major city in the world. London is a good example. Visit museums, grab a bite to eat, travel on the Tube. Do nothing out of the ordinary. Except, when you get back to your house or hotel at the end of the day, take a look at your fingernails. Most likely you will see a thick collection of dirt under each nail. Now grab a tissue and blow your nose. You might see the same ... Full Story

When Global Warming Happens, Where Should You Go?

Global warming first started causing concern in the 1980s. Global warming is not the same as the greenhouse effect which is a natural phenomenon on which life depends. The Earth’s atmosphere captures some of the Sun’s energy, which warms the Earth and enables it to support life. Global warming, on the other hand, is the result of man-made emissions. We all know that global warming is happening, although of course there are still those who want to attribute it to solar sunspots or say that the current rise in temperatures is just part of a normal cycle. However, despite the sceptics, ... Full Story

A Lot of Allotment

Back in May this year I took on an allotment in my local village. I’m not quite sure why I did, other than it was something that I’d always fancied having a go at but knew nothing about. I’ve only got a very small garden and so growing vegetables was never really an option if I still wanted somewhere to sit out and smell the roses. Or even grow the roses for that matter. So when I saw that a small field had been turned over to allotments I quickly hurried around knocking on doors to find out who I had ... Full Story

Five Alternative (Non-Car) Transports For The Future

In these times, we are all trying to do more to reduce our carbon footprint and be more aware of the effect our actions have on the world we live in. Cars and their emissions are one of the biggest problems we have today. While scientists, inventors and engineers strive to come up with more eco-friendly motoring options, such as electric cars, we thought we should take a look at some of the other non-car transportation that we could be using in years to come. First up, the Heathrow Pods. Officially called a Personal Rapid Transport (PRT) System, these futuristic pods ... Full Story

Christmas Trees - Real or Fake?

xmas1.jpg

I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to Christmas and always insist on having a real tree. The artificial ones just don’t do it for me, despite the fact many of them can look very attractive. But what’s best from an environmental point of view? You’d perhaps expect environmentalists to be against the principle of killing thousand of trees every year simply to decorate or homes, but in actual fact most of them agree that a real tree is the better choice. When it looks this good, does ... Full Story

Eco Towns in the UK – Will They Work?

800px-The_Parkway_Fountain.jpg

In 2007 the government announced its plan to build 10 eco towns in England. The plan was supported by the Town and Country Planning Association. The original aim had been to create 50 eco towns, a number of which would not have been new builds, but existing estates with added green ‘aspirations’. Homes in the UK currently account for 27% of the UK’s yearly total of 40 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. If the government is to achieve its target of reducing these emissions by 60% by 2050 then eco towns could make an important contribution.... Full Story

Most Environmentally Friendly Mobile Phone

These days many people are concerned about the environment. From melting polar ice caps to increasingly violent storms it seems that the world is becoming a more unstable place. Politicians, scientists and environmentalists all tell us that global warming will have devastating consequences for the people and animals of the world. We all know that we need to reduce our carbon footprint and one of the ways of doing this is to choose technology that uses energy more efficiently. Everyone (even Americans) agree this is a bad idea Many of us try to reduce ... Full Story

Air Conditioning

Starting from Africa, where the first humans originated, humans have spread out across the world to occupy almost every landmass. Even where conditions seem to be impossibly inhospitable, humans have managed to not only survive but also to thrive. Humans have adapted to their environment whether it is the frozen north or the hot deserts of the south. The success of humans is down to their ability to not only adapt to their surroundings, but also to change their environment. We kinda mess up the environment everywhere we go.... Air conditioning may not be ... Full Story

Things You Can Recycle That You Haven’t Thought About

We all know we can recycle bottles, cans, paper and cardboard. Recycling has gone from a lifestyle choice to a real-world necessity in the last few years, and as awareness and participation grows, so do the number of products that are able to be recycled. For manufacturers all over the world, marketing merchandise as easily recyclable is now a big selling point - just take a look at the latest adverts for Apple laptops for evidence of this. The great thing is, ... Full Story
